The differences in career adaptability, career optimism and job satisfaction by typology of planned happenstance skills in Korean workers

The purposes of this study are to examine the various types of clusters formed for different levels of five planned happenstance skills -curiosity, flexibility, persistence, optimism, risk taking- for Korean workers and to identify their differences in terms of career adaptability, career optimism and job satisfaction. For the purpose, a survey was conducted with 371 workers in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. A correlation analysis, a two-step cluster, MANOVA and a posteriori test using PASW Statistics 18.0 were carried out to verify if there are significant differences among the clusters. The research demonstrated the following outcome: First, those five planned happenstance skills of the Korean workers indicated significant positive correlation with career adaptability, career optimism, internal and external job satisfaction. Second, the cluster analysis revealed four different clusters of the planned happenstance skills are named as: the Passive Type, the Open Changing Type, the Constant Effort Type, the Active Type. Third, each group displayed significant differences in career adaptability, career optimism, internal and external job satisfaction. the Active Type showed the highest career adaptability and career optimism while the Passive Type demonstrated the lowest career adaptability and career optimism. In terms of job satisfaction, the Active Type indicated the highest internal and external job satisfaction, whereas it was the lowest for the Passive Type. The Constant Effort Type demonstrated higher career optimism than the Open Changing Type and internal and external job satisfaction than the Passive Type. Accordingly, the outcome may be used as the basic data when planning a career or corporate counseling as well as any other programs designed to enhance planned happenstance skills of those individuals who need practical help to make a happenstance to develop their own career. Finally, implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
