· Research topics: The Impact of Income Disparities on Housework Time Gaps Among Dual-Earner Couples-Focusing on the Relative Resource Theory · Research background: This study aimed to examine the factors affecting the inequality of housework hours by gender as one of the measures to increase the birth rate. · Differences from prior research: Previous studies mainly focused on the relationship between the absolute income level of each couple and housework hours, while this study focused on the relative income gap between dual-income couples and the resulting gap in housework hours. · Research method: Using the 2022 Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF), this study employed hierarchical regression analysis to examine the impact of income disparities among dual-earner couples on housework time gaps(N=2,249). · Research results: First, as the income gap between men and women increased, the housework time gap between couples significantly widened. Second, both women’s and men’s working hours had a significant impact on the housework time gap. Specifically, as women’s working hours increased, the housework time gap between couples narrowed, while as men’s working hours increased, the gap widened. Third, as the number of preschool and school-aged children increased, the housework time gap between couples significantly widened. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study suggests various improvements in family, corporate, and social policies to promote work-family balance, alongside discussions on the inequality of housework time between spouses. It is expected to contribute to the establishment of a social foundation that helps mitigate the inequality of housework time between couples.
