In order for learners to grow into adults who can take care of, understand, and coordinate their emotions, it is necessary for them to be provided with opportunities to experience and face various emotions. Of the various emotions that can be dealt with in literature education, this study focused on the educational value of shame, and presented the spectrum of shame in modern poetry and the educational process for it. Shame is an incomplete human emotion that constantly slides away from one’s goal while pursuing a decent life, and an ethical emotion that deeply implicates oneself in the pain of others. Shame has educational significance and value, which can be comprehended from the following points. First, it is an emotion that allows one to understand and reflect on oneself to set goals for life. Second, it is a social emotion that makes one recognize oneself through the relationships with others. Third, it is an emotion that gets oneself involved in the tragedies that occur in the community. In order to materialize the three characteristics of shame, the works of Yun Dong-ju, Kim Soo-young, and Hwang Ji-woo were analyzed. I focused on the characteristics of shame as a self-reflection present in Yun Dong-ju's works, the social and relational characteristics of shame present in Kim Soo-young's works, and the characteristics of shame that function as a sense of solidarity for the community present in Hwang Ji-woo's works. In addition, I suggested the following three steps as a process for the education of shame. These include “experience of shame through empathy and identification”, “internalization of shame through recollection and imagination,” and “practice of shame through awareness and interest.” Literature appreciation allows the subject to temporarily isolate himself/herself from external stimuli and focus on the inside. As literature education includes the process of appreciating literature, it is necessary to seek various educational attempts so that the learners can become mature citizens who understand and express their emotions.
