South Korea's retirement age system, mandating employment termination at 60, has faced significant misalignment between policies and corporate practices since its implementation in 2016. Addressing this decoupling is crucial for effective reform. Japan provides a strong example with phased legislation, business support, and wage reforms aligning policies with corporate practices. These efforts have enabled companies to retain senior employees in roles suited to their skills and health, minimizing decoupling and stabilizing the system. Strengthening institutional frameworks, expanding age-friendly HR strategies, and introducing flexible work arrangements are vital to resolving South Korea's challenges. The government must also provide support through monitoring and consulting to ensure long-term alignment and success.
