초록
The purpose of this study was to understand the process of vicarious post-traumatic growth(VPTG) of counselors, and explore factors affecting the VPTG process. Participants were 10 licensed counselors who mainly meet victims of human violence at trauma centers and public support organization for trauma survivors. Interview data were analyzed using Grounded Theory Approach(Strauss & Corbin, 1990, 1998, 2008). The results of this study were as follows: First, the VPTG process of the participants was through three stages; the stage of awakening/opening, the stage of separation/recharging, the stage of accommodation/connection. Second, the factors involved in the process of overcoming the central phenomenon of ‘disrupting safety/trust schema’, ‘intrusive thought and safety pursuing action’ and ‘burn out’ included ‘witnessing changes and growth of clients’, ‘inner/trained resources as a counselor’, ‘social/professional support and assistant’. Third, the core category of the VPTG process of the participants was ‘expanding empathy and practicing social role beyond vicarious traumatization’. Given the results of this study, the implications of the developmental characteristics of VPTG and education and training of trauma counseling were discussed. And the limitations of the study and suggestions for further research were added.
