The study examined the moderating effects of social support on the effects of sensory processing sensitivity(SPS) total score and its sub-factors Low Sensory Threshold(LST), Ease of Excitation(EOE), and Aesthetic Sensitivity(AES) on parenting stress in mothers of Preschoolers. The Korean Sensory Processing Sensitivity Scale, the Korean Parenting Stress Inventory 4th Short Form (K-PSI-4-SF), and the Social Support Scale were administered to 254 mothers of children aged 1 to 6 years old. The data collected were analysed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical program, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to test the relationship between variables and moderating effects. The results were as follows. First, higher mothers' SPS total score, LST, and EOE were associated with higher parenting stress, and higher levels of AES were associated with lower parenting stress. Second, the moderating effect of social support on the effects of maternal SPS total score and its subfactors, EOE and AES, on parenting stress was significant. Specifically, higher levels of maternal social support and higher maternal SPS total score and EOE were associated with higher levels of parenting stress. On the other hand, high AES was associated with lower levels of parenting stress. The significance of this study is that it specifically examined the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between mothers‘ SPS and parenting stress, providing a basis for understanding mothers’ SPS and reducing parenting stress.
