In the post-war period, The Korean visitors traveling to America mostly went abroad with a small number of privileged elites, mostly for reasons such as invitation, delegation and participation in overseas meetings, in the name of cultural exchange. It was a short-term tour of inspection, and the people they met were mainly the social leaders and the successful ethnic Koreans who met in formal places. In contrast, Jeon sook hui's travel essay collection, The Emotions of Foreign Land is a very unusual because that Jeon experienced America's true self in everyday life with all sorts of Americans for a long time. The travel in this book itself has been filled with almost private travel schedules, except for a few official schedules. In the 1950s, American and American culture peaked because of anti-Communism and the friendly spirit toward the United States which was a friendly ally of the Korean War. As a central position of world power, american culture had a great impact on Korean society. At that time, Koreans visited the U.S. mainly in the form of a state-led visit, and the purpose of the visit was to experience the legitimacy of its free-serving system. During this period, Jeon Suk-hui's journey to America creates a meaningful point, while maintaining her critical view of American life and Americanism. Unlike other people's travel essay of the same time, Orientalism or oxydentalism are less distinctive in this book, and efforts to understand American culture that has removed preconceptions and fantasies of the time are revealed. Jeon thinks of practical ways to rebuild Korean society by comparing the situation in the U.S. with the reality in Korean society at that time. The conflict between the advanced perception of women and the conservative notion is also worth carefully examining. Jeon's record of travel methods and routes is also meaningful in that they have the data value of traveling abroad in the 1950s.
