The pansori story Shimcheongjeon has been recreated in many mediums in various fields, and each of these mediums shows the possibility for various interpretations by constructing new epics around Shimcheong and Shimbongsa. In particular, content focusing on the character of the father, Shimbongsa, has been changed in accordance with changes in society and culture. Keeping this in mind, this study analyzes two webtoons, “Shimbongsajeon” and “Baramsori,” that reconstruct the narrative of Shimcheongjeon. In both of the webtoons, Shimbongsa’s narrative is altered and the scene where he saves his daughter is highlighted, establishing Shimbongsa as the “Blind Swordsman.” The central narratives of the two webtoons are a salvation narrative, in which Shimbongsa rescues his daughter, and a revenge narrative, in which hostile forces are punished. Through this, the life of Shimbongsa, which was originally caricatured in Shimcheongjeon, is restructured and his instinctive love as a father is emphasized. Shimbongsa is not an incompetent father. He is portrayed as a father who cannot cope with his daughter’s crises powerlessly, an absolute patriarchal authority, a savior, and a man filled with fatherly love who takes risks and faces death in order to regain his deprived daughter from absurd forces. Shimbongsa reminds us of the problem of the status of “fathers” which is emerging as a current issue, in which paternal status and authority have fallen.
