A Scoping Review of International Research on Experiences of Embitterment in Organizations

This study conducted a scoping review to examine the key research trends in international research related to embitterment. A search of international papers published between 2015 and 2024 using the EBSCO, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases yielded a total of 461 studies, of which 19 were included in the final analysis. The study findings were categorized into three main themes: causes of embitterment experiences, the contents of the experience, and their consequences. The primary causes of embitterment within organizations were classified into occupational factors, work environment, and direct incidents triggering embitterment. Embitterment experiences were found to influence complex cognitive and emotional factors, leading to various psychological distress symptoms such as emotional instability and psychological burnout, and ultimately resulting in long-term maladjustment within organizations. Furthermore, this study confirmed that embitterment experiences and their accompanying maladaptive symptoms can arise not only from specific occupational groups or traumatic events but also from the accumulation of chronic job stress. These findings highlight the necessity of addressing chronic organizational embitterment to promote employees' adaptation, performance improvement, and psychosocial stability within organizations.
