A Study on Perceptions of the Functions and Roles of Learning Spaces in Public Lifelong Education Institution

· Research topics: This study aims to examine the current state of learning space development in public lifelong education institution and to explore the functions and roles of these learning spaces as they emerge through the process of responding to that development. · Research background: There is a growing need to explore new directions by analyzing practical cases from the field of lifelong education regarding the construction of learner-centered learning spaces that embody the essence of lifelong learning. · Differences from prior research: While previous research on learning spaces has predominantly focused on the reconfiguration of school spaces for school-aged children, studies addressing the changes and characteristics of lifelong learning spaces remain insufficient. · Research method: A case study was conducted with seven adult learners who had more than two years of experience at a public lifelong education institution. Participant observation and in-depth interviews using semi-structured questionnaires were conducted and the collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. · Research results: In the context of newly created learning spaces, learners sought and implemented alternatives to address emerging challenges, thereby reconstructing learner-friendly learning spaces and shaping the roles of these spaces. Based on these experiences, learners began to ascribe meaning to these spaces as ‘a place of new and mutual learning filled with a sense of hospitality’, ‘a public living room for all’, and ‘a space of mutual care connected through loose ties of solidarity’. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study recognized the need for change in lifelong education learning spaces and suggested directions for the constructing and operating of learner-friendly learning spaces in response.
