The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for future research by examining the overall trend of art therapy research based on counseling theory and then comparatively analyzing the research content trends for each counseling theory. Among the papers published in academic journals from 20 11 to July 2021, 151 papers with counseling theory specified in the title and abstract were selected; classified by year, research type, and research content; and analyzed in terms of frequency and percentage. The results were as follows. First, the trend by year was the most studied in 2015 and cognitive behavior was studied the most. Second, experimental studies were the most common trends by research type. Third, based on examining the trends in 122 studies that conducted actual clinical trials, adults were the most common subjects and were studied at a high rate via psychoanalysis. As for the treatment type, the group setting was the most common, and the object relationship and cognitive behavior were studied at high rates. In the treatment session, psychoanalysis, relational theory, analytical psychology and cognitive behavior were conducted more than 30 times. Self-growth was the most common treatment goal, and psychoanalysis and person-centered theory were high. Art activities and techniques were found to use characteristic methods according to the counseling theory and treatment goals. Based on these research results, the significance and limitations of this study were then discussed.
