It has been suggested that the social relationship between offender and victim should be the key focus in the analysis of homicide(Silverman & Mukherjee, 1987). The current study hypothesized that the difference between intrafamilial and stranger homicide could best be understood by using two frameworks,expressive/instrumental aggression and planned/unplanned violence. Multidimensional analysis on the crime scene actions of 66 homicides showed the usefulness of these two frameworks in differentiating intrafamilial homicides from stranger homicides. Intrafamilial homicides were more likely to co-occur with expressive behaviors, whereas stranger homicides were more likely to co-occur with instrumental behaviors. In addition, stranger homicides were more likely than intrafamilial homicides to display an offender’s planning of the offense and forensic awareness.
