초록
The purpose of this study was to examine the research trends of students’ core competencies since the OECD’s DeSeCo project in 2005. To this end, we analyzed research contents and research methods of 322 journal articles on students’ core competencies published from 2006 to August 2021. For the research content trends, the research on the practice and its effect analysis (29.8%) showed the highest portion of studies, followed by the research on theory and content analysis (22.4%), current status and perceptions (17.4%), sub-factors of core competencies and their measurement development (17.4%), and relationships of core competencies to relevant variables (13.0%). For the research method trends, quantitative research has been conducted the most (49.1%), followed by literature research (31.1%), mixed-method research (15.2%), and qualitative research (4.7%). Research targeting college students (50.9%) has been performed more than research targeting elementary and secondary school students (40.4%). Finally, research using self-reported surveys and questionnaires occupied the largest portion, followed by literature collection (34.4%), interview and delphi method (13.3%), and participant observation (1.1%). The results about the content analysis contributed to understanding important issues surrounding core competencies and providing information on whether the research thus far has well reflected on the educational needs for core competencies in reality. The results also suggested the necessity of utilizing diverse methodologies such as increases in collecting different research data and materials and performing more qualitative research.
