Hegel’s Encyclopedia was published three times(1817, 1827, 1830). Since the ‘time gap between the first edition and the second edition’ is greater than the ‘it between the second edition and the third edition’, researchers have so far conducted comparative analyses focusing primarily on the former rather than the latter. The same applies to ‘art’, which is the first moment of the ‘absolute spirit’ in Encyclopedia. However, looking at the contents of the ‘art’ section in Encyclopedia, one can find very important decisive differences in relation to Hegel’s claim to art in the changes between the second edition and the third edition. The main content is as follows. First, the three art forms of symbolic, classic and romantic are explicitly described only in the third edition, not in the second edition. This shows that Hegel clearly considers his standpoint of ‘Aesthetic Lectures’ in describing art as the absolute spirit in the third edition of Encyclopedia. Through this, Hegel further expands and embodies the status of art in his system, which is related to the second aspect. Second, Hegel no longer focuses on classical art in t he t hird e dition. U nl ike in t he s econd edition, H egel d escribes t he m eaning and limitations of classical art more clearly, conscious of its comparison with romantic a rt. What i s reveal ed b y the above discussion i s that H egel was constantly concerned about the actuality of art in his philosophical system.
