Japan, which has been pursuing a leading role in the Indo-Pacific strategy based on the U.S.-Japan alliance, is considering revising its national security strategy this year, showing the possibility of drastic changes in the security policy of Japan, including “building fundamental defense capabilities” of more than 2% of GDP within five years. It analyzes Japan’s national security strategy from the perspective of correlation between the Japan-U.S. alliance and the Indo-Pacific strategy, and derives implications for security on the Korean Peninsula through major issues and strategies of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense. From this point of view, Japan’s national security strategy is expanding its global military role along with the integration of the U.S.-Japan alliance, and it can be analyzed through the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine and China’s military exercises against Taiwan. Based on this, the U.S.-Japan issues related to the Indo-Pacific strategy include public debate on “nuclear sharing” in preparation for Russia and North Korea’s “use of nuclear priorities,” global role sharing in promoting the Indo-Pacific strategy, and preparation for emergency situations in the Indo-Pacific region. Through the Indo-Pacific strategy, the U.S. and Japan maintain regional stability and international order, share their roles, and expand to global areas. The recent U.S.-Japan alliance and Japan’s Indo-Pacific strategy have implications and suggestions for the security of the Korean Peninsula, ① the importance of preparation for emergency situations in the region, ② the urgency of trust-building measures to prevent accidental conflict, ③ the establishment of Korea-Japan guidelines, and ④ It is the concreteization of Korea’s role in the Indo-Pacific Strategy, ⑤ securing public consensus, ⑥ actively promoting security cooperation between Korea and Japan and South Korea. Japan’s Indo-Pacific strategy and analysis of the Japan-U.S. alliance are fundamental to national security and are useful in establishing a national security strategy and planning an Indo-Pacific strategy under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration with common threats and concerns in the region.
