초록

This study is equivalent to preliminary work describing the performance history of modern Korean historical dramas. To this end, the study sought to summarize accurate performance-related information. Historical drama performances during the colonial period were advertised under the titles of historical or period dramas. Usually, the performances were in a typical play format, but there were also many performances that included singing, opera, or musical instruments. Specifically, there were many adaptations that capitalized on the popularity of original novels that were serialized in newspapers. In some cases, plays published in magazines were performed, and conversely, historical dramas that failed as performances were published in magazines. Contrary to what was announced, there were many cases where performances were not held due to censorship or internal circumstances of the troupe. The year 1940 was the turning point at which the characteristics of historical drama performances changed. Since its inception, between 1931 to 1939, the popularity of historical drama performances gradually increased in the first half. The historical drama started as a popular play that evoked strong emotions. In the second half of the year, thanks to the tacit support of the Japanese Empire, historical drama performances enjoyed the heyday of their success. This was the result of historical drama performances receiving attention as a tool to legitimize the Great East Asian War.
