초록

This study investigates the impact of rapidly advancing generative AI translation technologies on the English translation of Korean literature. AI’s role in literary translation—traditionally seen as a uniquely human craft—raises both challenges and threats. The research examines the background, motivations, and implications of AI’s increasing presence in literary translation, aiming to reevaluate what sets human translation apart. Of particular interest is how ChatGPT, through varied prompts, now mimics the stylistic diversity once thought unique to human translators. As AI translation prioritizes the faithfulness to source texts, it not only challenges the authority of human translators but also prompts reflection on whether the very flaws of human translation—such as omissions, modifications or even mistranslations—might offer a more emotionally resonant experience for translation readers in contrast to logical and omission-free AI translation.
