This paper examined the time of the formation of “Samogok”, a court song of the Koryŏ dynasty by means of melodic interpretation. “Samogok” is commonly thought to be a court song of the Koryŏ Dynasty (918–1392) with ancient origins in the song, ”Mokchu”, of Silla Kingdom (57 BCE–935 CE). The lyrics and formal characteristics of “Samogok” suggest that this song originated in the songs of Silla Kingdom. The lyrics correspond to the background story of “Mokchu”, while the forms are similar to that of the hyangga genre, which contains the chŏndaejŏl husojŏl form. However, some scholars challenged this assumption. They investigated the article in Mokchŏn upji, revealing that it did not contain “Samogok”, as suggested by the other scholars. Thus, they argued, “Samogok” does not have any concrete relation with the song “Mokchu”. This paper suggested to use the music of “Samogok” to solve the long pending argument about the origin of “Samogok”. Depending on the thorough musical investigation, “Pukchŏn,” a song from the 14th century, had a direct musical influence on “Samogok.” Upon the statements in Koryŏsa, “Pukchŏn” was created during the reign of the King Chunghye(r. 1315∼1344), so the formation of “Samogok” can not cast back later than the King’s reign. The music of “Pukchŏn” also affected those of “Sŏgyŏngbyŏlgok” and “Changhwi,” court songs of Koryŏ and Chosŏn, respectively. This musical background suggests that “Samogok” originated in the early Chosŏn dynasty(1392–1910), which followed the Koryŏ dynasty. Thus, “Samogok” is not a Koryŏ song of ancient origins but an elaborately modified Chosŏn song. This illustrates how the musical traditions of Koryŏ songs affected Chosŏn songs during the lated Koryŏ and early Chosŏn dynasties.
