Currently, the world is facing the challenge of an ageing population, and the growth of the elderly population is placing new demands on all aspects of society. However, the resources to support the elderly population are decreasing, and the quality of the environment in which the elderly live is also declining. Against this background, how to provide the elderly with a suitable living environment has become an urgent social issue that needs to be addressed. This study focuses on the concept of ‘Healing Garden in Silver Town’, which aims to help the elderly improve their physical and mental health through the design of spaces that interact with nature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to summarise the spatial characteristics of the Healing Gardens in Silver Towns in South Korea, China and Japan, and propose targeted design strategies, in order to provide a scientific basis and reference for the design of Healing Gardens in Silver Towns and other elderly care facilities. The research method is to analyse the characteristics of the elderly, the theoretical basis of Silver Town and Healing Gardens, and summarise the spatial elements of Healing Gardens as evaluation indicators of the healing effect of Healing Gardens, based on existing literature and previous research. The scope of the study is to analyse nine representative cases established after 2000 in South Korea, China and Japan that are popular and similar in scale. Expert questionnaires and interviews were conducted with professors and designers in the environmental design field to analyse the current design strengths and weaknesses of Healing Gardens. The results show that there are significant differences in the spatial design of the Healing Gardens in the Silver Towns of South Korea, China and Japan. Through theoretical research and case analysis, the direction of space design for the Healing Gardens in Silver Towns that can be practically used is explored. This will promote a rich life and physical and mental rehabilitation for the elderly.
