We have investigated electrical properties of a ribbon-shaped iron-based magnetic amorphous alloy Fe(85-x)CoxTi7Hf6B2 (x=20, 30, 35) which were fabricated by a single copper roller vacuum melt-spinning technique. It has been found that their saturation magnetization was similar to that of other FeCo-based alloys and had a maximum value when the Co content was about 30% in these soft ferromagnetic amorphous alloys. Despite all this, the change of Co content in this system did not have an obvious effect on the magnetic properties of the iron-based amorphous alloy. It was worth noting that the increase of Co content led to a significant transformation of the electrical properties in this iron-based amorphous alloy system. For example, a negative temperature coefficient of resistance was measured when the Co content was 20%, corresponding to a P-type semiconductor-like behavior characteristic. However, when the Co content was increased to 30% and 35%, the temperature coefficient of resistance was transformed to a positive value, it exhibited the resistance temperature characteristic similar to that of ordinary metal conductors. In addition, according to the electronegativity and ionization potential of the constituent elements in this amorphous alloy, the physical mechanism of Co content controlling the carrier (hole) concentration was revealed, which provided a new method to design new iron-based amorphous alloy materials. © Editorial Office of Chinese Journal of Rare Metals.
