This paper is a study that reveals the modern acceptance genealogy by collectively referring to biography, life history, historical stories, and anecdotes as ‘Wonhyo narrative’. In this regard, this paper assumed a long text, which corresponds to a major inflection point in the style of the ‘Wonhyo narrative’, as the subject of discussion. First, the intermittent phase was examined by analyzing the discourse characteristics of the text, that is, the aspect of narrative and anecdotal representation. Second, the authors' intentions for writing or creation were identified. Based on this, I tried to clarify the nature of the discourse inherent in the text. The modern acceptance of the ‘Wonhyo narrative’, which started with Jang Do-bin's “Great Wonhyo(『偉人元曉』)” and reached Lee Kwang soo's historical novel “Great Buddhist Priest Wonhyo(『元曉大師』)”, has transformed into the spread of enlightenment discourse, popularization of Buddhism, and propaganda of imperial discourse. The media was also different accordingly. The dominant trend was to gradually expand the fictional horizon and seek popularity from biography, which rewritten historical records, to calling the newspaper's historical novel. In conclusion, this paper looked at the beginning of the formation and development process of modern historical literature by tracking the colorful lineage of the ;Wonhyo narrative; that spans the citation or adaptation of historical records and the insertion of fiction.
