The purpose of this study was to explore the potential for cultivating citizenship in university general music education based on Aristotle’s concept of ethos. It examined Aristotle’s discussions of music education, liberal education, leisure, virtue, emotion, and civic formation in Book VIII of Politics, while drawing on habit, the mean, and practical wisdom in the Nicomachean Ethics as ethical grounds for ethos formation. It also analyzed literature on general and citizenship education, previous studies on university general music education, and 216 syllabi of music-related general education courses offered at 20 four-year universities in Korea in 2025. The findings indicated that rhythm and melody may imitate or represent affective states and dispositions, and that repeated musical experiences may contribute to the habituation of learners’ affective responses and judgments of pleasure. Aristotle’s theory of music education also suggested civic-educational implications, as music education can be understood as liberal education that cultivates regulated emotion, meaningful leisure, and orientation toward communal life. The syllabus analysis further showed that university general music education has the potential to cultivate emotional, cultural, communal, and integrative citizenship. However, such citizenship was often implicit rather than explicit in course objectives and assessments, suggesting the need to restructure objectives, content, pedagogy, and assessment.
