This study explores future directions for researchers and practitioners in the field of lifelong education in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). We critically examined major social and philosophical debates precipitated by the recent technological enhancement of generative AI. We categorized major debates into five areas: 1) AI impact on the labor market, 2) the knowledge paradigm embedded in generative AI, 3) the politics of algorithms, 4) the alignment between human ethics and AI, and 5) the potential of AI for public usage. Based on this categorization, we analyzed the implications for the field of lifelong education: 1) the transformation in the roles of educators, 2) challenging assumptions embedded in learning theories and learner subjectivity, 3) navigating learner support and control in algorithmic pathways, 4) values embedded in lifelong education as nodes for ethical alignment, and 5) educational access and inclusivity. Drawing on these analyses, we propose academic and practical directions for lifelong education, focusing on reconstructing learning theories, bridging the digital divide and restoring communities, fostering digital citizenship, building learner-centered learning environments, enhancing educator competencies, and ensuring public values in education.
