Music and religion are cultural phenomena that have maintained a close relationship throughout human history. Music based on religious inspiration or material can give religious resonance due to the theological reflection and religious expression inherent in the work. Liszt's < Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses > published in 1853 and Messiaen's < Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus > composed in 1944 have in common that they are piano works based on religious elements. The purpose of this study is to present a broad understanding and perspective on how music can be a means of religious and sacred expression through comparative analysis of these two works. To this end, I examined the lives and religious beliefs of Liszt and Messiaen, as well as the outlines of the two works and then examined the expression of religious elements in the works. As a result of the study, it was found that religious elements were expressed in various ways in the Liszt's < Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses > and Messiaen's < Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus > in terms of the programmatic description, religious motives or themes, symbolism, and religious views of nature. It is hoped that this study will promote various follow-up studies of interdisciplinary approaches that encompass religious studies, cultural studies, and musicology on the topic of music and religion.
