This study aimed to reveal the characteristics and correlates of child maltreatment recurrence in the Korean child protective services(CPS) system. For this purpose, we categorized maltreatment types into thee groups (single maltreatment, single recurrence, and multiple-time recurrence) and examined the frequency, characteristics, and the onset of recurrence for each groups, as well as the predictors of single recurrence and multiple-time recurrence. The sample consisted of 5,292 children who were reported to the Korean CPS in 2014 and whose cases were substantiated as child maltreatment. Among the participants, 92.3% were victims of single maltreatment, 7.0% were victims of single recurrence, and 0.7% were victims of multiple-time recurrence by the end of 2016. Single maltreatment, single recurrence and multiple time recurrence did not show differences in the type of maltreatment. However, the time interval between the first maltreatment and the first recurrent maltreatment was shorter for multiple-time recurrence than for single recurrence. Multinomial logistic regression analyses showed correlates of single recurrence and multiple-time recurrence compared to single maltreatment. The correlates of single recurrence were multiple-type maltreatment, child age, child emotional problems, perpetrator being a parent, intimate partner violence, alcohol abuse, welfare recipient status, and single parent family. The correlates of multiple-time recurrence were multipe-type maltreatment, intimate partner violence and financial difficulties. Based on the findings, we discussed ways to prevent child maltreatment recurrence in the Korean CPS.
