This study analyzed the structural relationships and pathways among planned happenstance skills, career barriers, career preparation behaviors, and career adaptability in junior college students. The primary objective was to empirically examine the direct and indirect associations and mediation effects among these variables using SEM. A total of 286 undergraduate students enrolled in universities located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province participated in the study. Structural equation modeling (SEM) with bootstrapping was employed to test the hypothesized paths. The findings indicated that planned happenstance skills exerted a significant negative direct effect on career barriers and a significant positive direct effect on career preparation behaviors. While the indirect effect of planned happenstance skills on career preparation behaviors was not statistically significant, the total effect was significant. Additionally, planned happenstance skills showed a significant indirect effect on career adaptability. In contrast, career barriers did not significantly influence career preparation behaviors, but they did have a significant negative direct effect on career adaptability. Career preparation behaviors demonstrated a significant positive direct effect on career adaptability. Among all direct effects, the strongest was the impact of plansned happenstance skills on career barriers. The only significant indirect effect was observed from planned happenstance skills to career adaptability. When considering both direct and indirect effects, the total effects, in descending order, were as follows: planned happenstance skills on career barriers, career preparation behaviors on career adaptability, and career barriers on career adaptability. The impact of career barriers on career preparation behaviors was not significant.
