The Organ Music as Brahms’s Last Work - A Hermeneutical Study on the Musical Testament
  • 황순도

초록

This study interprets the meaning of Chorale Preludes, Brahms’s final work, as a testament. Based on the fact that this was composed in Bach’s style, and that it was written as a counterpart to the Four Serious Songs, this study applies an inter-commentary approach. The rhetoric in Bach’s compositions is inherited in Brahms’s final work through structural arrangement and narrative. Based on the synthesis of analyzed musical rhetoric and primary sources, this study demonstrates an existential narrative centered on Clara by uncovering historical musical figures from Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Beethoven’s Fidelio embedded in his last Song. The ultimate message is salvation through love and an optimistic eschatology, which corresponds to Bach’s theological thought. Bach’s role as revealed in this organ music by Brahms can be interpreted as both a model of his humanistic creative spirit and an authority that authenticates the work’s sincerity as a testament.
