i-Tree Eco를 활용한 나무 데이터 기반 기후변화교육의 적용 가능성 탐색 -캠퍼스숲 시민과학 사례를 중심으로-

This study applied a citizen science activity based on campus forest tree data using i-Tree Eco to a university course, and analyzed students’ responses that emerged in the process to explore the educational meaning of the activity and its applicability as climate change education. Nine students enrolled in the Climate and Environmental Communication course at S Women's University measured campus trees and related data, and used i-Tree Eco to examine ecosystem service information including air pollutant removal, carbon storage, carbon sequestration, oxygen production, and avoided runoff. A qualitative analysis of anonymous worksheet responses completed after the activity showed that students experienced the difficulty of measurement and recognized the importance of data reliability, developed a concrete understanding of the relationship between the climate crisis and their everyday living spaces through the process of converting tree data into climate and environmental information, and came to reframe the campus forest as a living space connected to climate crisis response. This study demonstrates that i-Tree Eco-based activities can be used, beyond their function as an urban forest valuation tool, as a learning medium in university liberal arts education that connects place-based and data-driven climate change education, citizen science education, and science communication.
