Simcheongjeon has been appraised as one of the best classical Pansori novels that Koreans have enjoyed for a long time. The tale has been passed down until today, and Simcheong is often referred to as an icon for filial piety. Simcheongjeon has received attention in Korean language education because this tale is appropriate for teaching various aspects of Korean culture. However, the stories of Simcheong that are included in Korean textbooks today are often a challenge to understand because they have mixed elements of folktales and traditional fairytales and the storylines are oversimplified. They only highlight Simcheong’s filial piety to her father and omit the concreteness that descriptive literature possesses. Therefore, lessons taught using Simcheongjeon are often grammar- and vocabulary-focused rather than providing students with valuable insights into Korean literature and culture. The main causes of these problems are the lack of fundamental understanding of Simcheongjeon itself and the unavailability of a text designed specifically for teaching the Korean language. To best use Simcheongjeon in teaching the Korean language, the story should be rewritten as a literature text suitable for foreign learners. In order to do this, the characteristics of the original story must be carefully analyzed to redefine the narrative compositions, including birth, growth and filial behavior, death and rebirth, and reunion and delightment. Then, the story elements should be placed under these compositions to rewrite Simcheongjeon into a highly probable literature text. Such restructured literature texts will allow students to understand Korean culture more naturally.
