초록

Korean children’s and young adult novels emerged as part of the youth literary movement during the Japanese colonial period and have explored unique narrative techniques. This study first analyzed the process of objectification by examining the position and attitude of the narrator, focusing on Bang Jung-hwan’s works, which pioneered the form of children’s and young adult novels. From 1923 to 1930, Bang Jung-hwan created a total of 15 children’s and young adult novels, all of which adopt third-person omniscient narration. The narrator maintains little distance from the implied author and adopts an authoritative and somewhat inflammatory tone. Until 1926, the storytelling method, with an oral narrator breaking the ‘fourth wall,’ actively intervening, and rhythmically repeating phrases, was dominant. In 1927, when an observer narrator was attempted in a student novel, narratorial intervention decreased, and character focalization became more frequent. However, there was some confusion, such as the sudden appearance of a first-person narrator who seemed to represent the implied author. To overcome the limitations of oral storytelling, scene techniques such as background description, character appearance, photo insertion, and direct representation of characters’ dialogues and psychological states were sought. In the widespread use of the oral narration style pioneered by Bang Jung-hwan, it has become a basic form of Korean children’s and young adult novels. The resulting oral storytelling method can build rapport with the reader and convey the storyline and message clearly and effectively, but there is a limitation because it causes a violation of the viewpoint, and the distance between the reader and the character increases. A first-person narrator, which can overcome these problems, will be examined in a subsequent paper.
