The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effect of body dissatisfaction and the moderating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between body shame and disordered eating behavior among female college students, providing foundational data for the development of policies to enhance their physical and mental health. A survey was conducted with 189 female students enrolled in four-year universities, and data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro. The analysis revealed significant correlations among all variables. The mediation analysis showed that body dissatisfaction fully mediated the relationship between body shame and disordered eating behavior. The moderation analysis indicated that self-compassion buffered the relationship between body shame and disordered eating behavior. However, the moderated mediation effect of self-compassion on the pathway from body shame through body dissatisfaction to disordered eating behavior was not statistically significant. Based on these findings, the study discusses measures to prevent disordered eating behaviors among female college students, such as education and awareness campaigns, as well as the expansion of health insurance coverage, to provide more comprehensive support.
