In the automobile industry, the drastic reduction of the logistics cost is becoming essential to cope with the customer satisfaction and infinite competition. The purpose of this paper is to examine the outbound logistics in automobile industry. Many of logistics-related research in automobile industry has focused on inbound logistics and procurement. Research into outbound logistics is relatively few. In the case of Toyota, outbound logistics from the vehicle assembly plant to the dealership directly contributes to the responsiveness of the overall vehicle supply system by representing the lead-time from factory to customers. Since 1980's, Toyota has reformed logistics system in terms of build-to-order, considering how to adapt production schedules to the demand changes in the marketplace. In examining the efficiency of outbound logistics system, different production and distribution structure should be considered. Meanwhile, with regards to the build-to-order transition, the case of Toyota suggest an alternative of future outbound logistics system for Korean automobile company, where there exist strong integration of among production and distribution.
