주세페 투치의 동양을 보는 관점에 대한 논란과 평가

20세기 석학으로서 티베트를 연구하며 동양학을 발전시켰던 주세페투치는 약 400여 점 이상의 방대한 연구와 저술을 남겼으며, 그가 연구하는 중에 수집한 유산을 박물관에 기증하며 동양학 연구에 기여했다. 본 논문에서는 동양학의 변화 속에서 투치의 삶에 대한 개요와 동양학자로서 그의 작업에 대한 관점과 평가를 살펴보았다. 특히 이 과정에서1978년 에드워드 사이드가 정의했던 ‘오리엔탈리즘’의 영향 속에서 투치에 대한 연구를 다루고 평가했던 내용을 다시 분석했다. 이를 통해 본연구는 투치에 대한 비판을 다루는 평론과 반론들을 중심으로 그의 글과 여러 시대의 사회, 문화, 정치적 맥락의 관계성을 검토하며 투치가남긴 유산에 대한 종합적인 평가에 기여하고자 한다. Giuseppe Tucci, the most prominent Tibetologist of the twentieth century, has made a very substantial contribution in Asian Studies through his research, writings (that exceed several hundreds), and the objects that he has brought from the East. This paper will present an overview of Tucci’s life and work as an Italian Orientalist, with a particular focus upon the evaluations and criticism levelled at his work in relation to “Orientalism”, as defined by Edward Said in his equally entitled book of 1978. In analysing the criticism of Tucci’s work, and the reactions and responses to it, this paper aims to provide some suggestions for a comprehensive evaluation of the legacy that he has left.
