A Study on the Psychological Resources for Caregiver of Children with Intellectual Disabilities through Song Psychotherapy

The purpose of this study is to examine the psychological resources cultivated through song psychotherapy for a middle-aged female caregiver of children with intellectual disabilities. The 8-session program integrates Robbins framework of self-discovery, self-expression, and self-actualization, across three psychotherapeutic levels, the outer, intermediate, and deeper levels. Verbal and musical responses were recorded and transcribed into text and were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Thematic coding identified 53 concepts as psychological resources. The eight psychological resource types are Hope, Self-compassion, Will, Empathy, Self-understanding, Resilience, Mindfulness, and Gratitude. This study is a single case study, which limits the generalization of the results. However, it is significant in that it reveals various psychological resources for the caregiver and these findings underscore the potential of song psychotherapy as an effective psychological intervention that could be a promising preventive approach for caregivers of children with disabilities.
