An analysis of the mediating effects of grit and creative personality in the relationship between positive parenting and adolescents’ academic engagement

This study aimed to examine the relationship between positive parenting, adolescents’ academic engagement, grit, and creative personality. In addition, it sought to confirm the mediating effects of grit and creative personality in the relationship between positive parenting and academic engagement among adolescents. To this end, 2,384 middle school students’ data sets from the third wave of the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey were analyzed using correlation analysis and the structural equation model, for which SPSS 25.0 and Mplus 8.2 were employed. The results are as follows. First, positive parenting, academic engagement, grit, and creative personality were significantly and positively correlated. Second, while grit mediated the relationship between positive parenting and academic engagement, the mediating effect of creative personality was not significant. In addition, the sequential mediating effect through grit and creative personality was found to be significant in the relationship between positive parenting and academic engagement. These results are meaningful in that they confirm that positive parenting, grit, and creative personality have important influences on academic engagement. Specifically, it expands the explanatory mechanism to improve adolescents’ academic engagement by proving that grit and creative personality are key components. Based on this, the educational implications for adolescents were discussed
