In 14th century, Goryeo dynasty was transparenced in the intervene of Yuan. The Buddhism which took a role of social management changed conservative. It connected with Yuan and focused on merit belief. The Suseonsa school was weakened and Beopsang school and Gajisan school were arose. They were connected with Yuan and Goryeo government. Chewon tried to suggest the reason and practice of practical belief, he based on Avalokitesvara belief which was maintained from Silla. With his comrade Inwon, Chewon believed actively Avalokitesvara belief. He wrote Hwaomgyeong-Gwanjajaebosalsoseolbeopmun- byeolhaengso and Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun-ryakhae. He wanted these books would be a guide of Avaloki- tesvara belief. Hwaomgyeong-Gwanjajaebosalsoseolbeopmun-byeolhaengso is the interpretation of separated part of Gan- davyuha(40 volumes), which contains Sudhana meet Avalokitesvara and hear his sermon. The author Che- won innoted the interpretation of Chengguan and added his own interpretation which is consisted of various books. Chewon intended to expound Avatam- saka-sutra linked with Lotus-sutra in Avalokitesvara belief. The Avalokitesvara belief of Avatamsaka-sutra is the practice of great benevolence, and give empha- sis on the fact that Avalokitesvara lives on the shore of Mt. Potalaka. That of Lotus-sutra is accomplishing people’s desires. Chewon joined these two various Avalokitesvara believes, because people want to get actual helps. The Avalokitesvara belief of Avatam- saka-sutra which shows Avalokitesvara derives people from twenty fears is similar to that of Lotus-sutra which Avalokitesvara derives three disasters and seven difficulties. So Chewon could join these two Avalokitesvara believes. Furthermore he found actual prayers for Avalokitesvara and listed them in that book. With this work, he showed that he wants to indicate practical praying for Avalokitesvara. So most of quoted books are annotations on the Gandavyuha (40volumes), and the book of responding prayers. Baekhwadoryangbalwonmun-ryakhae is the interpre- tation of praying letter for Avalokitesvara after he ascertained Naksan is the holy place where Avalokite- svara lives now. The letter intends to not deriving fears but wants to rebirth in Pure Land. Chewon quoted this with Uisang and Fazang, the Silla and Tang founders of Hwaom Buddhism. And he interpreted the detail of the case of practical Avalokitesvara belief. Chewon made these two books and did other works. The one was publishing the part of Avalokitesvara preaching in Gandavyuha-sutra(40volumes) for men’s reading, and the other one was the publishing of Samsippalbungongdeoksogyeong. He emphasized the practical praying for Avalokitesvara. In those days the writingsandpaintingsofAvalokitesvarawereincre- ased. Those Avalokitesvara works were second to Amita works. This was based on that circumstances. In those records we can find people’s praying for merit and Pure Land. This is also reflected those trends. The writing and publishing of Chewon helped the noble class who made merit through writing sutras. And it gave important roles through his effort for profounding the praying Avalokitesvara belief on the basement of Hwaom school. In 14th century, Goryeo dynasty must seek the new change which contains lower people’s intention. In that case, Chewon’s works were a meaningful result.
