With the focus on ‘self-understanding’, a theme often underdiscussed in the field of education, this study aimed to identify the meaning and characteristics of self-understanding experienced in (the process of) education and to investigate how self-understanding relates to education. To achieve the objective, this study analyzes the representative concepts of education to discuss the traits of self-understanding that can be drawn from the concepts. A theory of educative frame(the endogenous theory of education) is a crucial reference for this study in that the theory has explored the construction of the structure of educational concept as its core assignment. Based on the interpretation made in this study, previous research on education and a theory of educative frame share the characteristic of correlating education with self-understanding; however, a theory of educative frame emphasizes the distinct characteristics of educational relationship while displaying the traits of self-understanding that are difficult to experience through common relationships. Particularly, it is distinct in that heterogeneous traits of self-understanding are displayed in mutual relationships between master(the more advanced) and pupil(the less advanced).
