초록

This study aims to explore the possibilities of material memory and ecological formative aesthetics by analyzing sculptural experiments using driftwood and coral stone through the lens of new materialism. The researcher selected natural materials whose life activity has ended as primary media, producing candlesticks and sculptural objects, and translated the temporality revealed in the making process—such as folds, sedimentary structures, and changes in texture—into a formal language. Grounded in Jane Bennett’s concept of “thing-power” and Karen Barad’s concept of “intra-action,” the study interprets how material and maker move beyond a fixed subject–object relation, becoming generatively entangled and co-constituting form and meaning. The analysis shows that driftwood and coral stone operate as agents with their own histories and affects rather than as mere sculptural materials, and that through the artist’s intervention they undergo transformations that expand into new uses and symbolic meanings. This sculptural interplay not only broadens coexistent modes of making with nonhuman agents within craft-based sculpture, but also suggests the potential for a creative language in which material circulation, sensorial memory, and ecological sensibility are intertwined.
