This study aims to propose potential of the traditional filtering device to be used in a contemporary exhibition space. The examples and materials of the traditional filtering device, used in traditional daily lives of the Koreans, were investigated. The findings of the analysis were reinterpreted to apply the concepts and characteristics of the traditional filtering device in a contemporary manner. The device was redefined as an filtering structural object in a contemporary exhibition space with the concepts of light control and visual communications. In order to study contemporary architectural cases, Kolumba Museum by Peter Zumthor, Bamboo House by Kuma Kengo, and Liyuan Library by Li Xiaodong, which have been all built with local and traditional architectural materials for light filtering, were observed and analyzed. As a result of this study for designing an singular unit exhibition space, control of light, geometric patterns, and latent potentials of structural elements were presented in a form of a filtering pillar with the concept of a filtering device in an contemporary exhibition space. Through these processes, the filtering device can be developed into a unique architectural ones, incorporated with not only the exhibition space, but the building itself.
