This paper interpreted abstruse phrases in Goryeo-gayo, based on literary material. Interpretation of Goryeo-gayo is usually conducted in two ways: linguistic and literary approaches. Scholars have achieved fruitful results using one of these two perspectives, but in recent years, there is seldom communication between the two. This paper aims at intriguing the convergence of them. It presents literary material to the field of linguistic study and intrigues interdisciplinary discussions. Firstly, I investigated ding-a dol-ha in "Joengseokga". Scholars in the field of literature interpret this phrase as an expression related to musical instruments, but linguists do not accept this assertion. I verified the literary scholars' theory through the investigation of cultural customs of the days and presented the possibility that the phrase indicated soejong and seokgyeong. Soejong and seokgyeong are the representative musical instruments in the early Joseon period, related to ding and dol, respectively. Secondly, I examined gombae limbae in "Dongdong". Linguists understand this phrase as "the rear cup and the front cup" or "the god and the king". However, considering that this phrase corresponds to osoida, which means "to have come", the phrase is more likely related to the heavenly place, where the fortune and the virtue originated. The foregoing discussions demonstrate that the interdisciplinary research using the methods of both linguistic and literary studies can lead to more progressive interpretation of Goryeo-gayo.
