초록

This paper explores three interpretations and issues of the representative work, <A Frozen Mouth> by Kim Hakyoung(金鶴泳), a Korean writer in Japan. Kim Hakyoung’s novel is a literary touchstone to examine diverse positions of Korean diaspora in Japan. <A Frozen Mouth> deals with the fundamental wounds of human beings not captured by the nationalistic perspective. The hero, who was seriously hurt due to his ‘stuttering’ for his life, is an alter ego of Kim Hakyoung, who was also a stutterer himself. Kim Hakyoung, who stayed in the lonely world, finally ended a tragic life by committing suicide. Takeda Seiji[竹田青嗣], a second-generation Korean philosopher in Japan, showed lots of interest in and affection for Kim Hakyoung’s <A Frozen Mouth>. His appraisal of Kim Hakyoung is based on a very literary dimension. His critic accurately captures the implicit value of Kim Hakyoung’s literature. But His dichotomous thinking requires criticism. Seo Kyungsik(徐京植) recognizes the literary value of Kim Hakyoung’s novel. However, he is very critical of the context in which Kim Hakyoung’s novel is accepted in Japanese society. His criticism is being done on an overly political level. Considered at the dimension of complete understanding, there is a pity in the viewpoint of Seo Kyungsik. Yoon Guncha(尹健次) specifically mentioned the literature of Kim Hakyoung in his book ≪The Mental History of the Residence in Japan≫(『在日의 精神史』). He recognises the literary value of Kim Hakyoung’s novel <A Frozen Mouth> adequately. He keeps distance from Kim’s political position. The ambivalent feelings of Yoon Guncha are projecting differences of varied positions and troubles of Koreans in Japan. <A Frozen Mouth>, a masterpiece by Kim Hakyoung, Korean writer in Japan, is a novel that shows how difficult it is to communicate with others.
