This study aims to examine the mediating effect of parenting efficacy on the relationship between mothers’psychological well-being and children’s internalizing/externalizing maladaptive behaviors. For this purpose, 210 children aged three to five years old, enrolled in childcare centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi, and their mothers participated in the study. Data collected from these participants were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results are as follows: First, mothers’psychological well-being showed a significant negative correlation with children’s internalizing/externalizing maladaptive behaviors, while it had a significant positive correlation with parenting efficacy. Additionally, parenting efficacy was found to have a significant negative correlation with children’s internalizing/externalizing maladaptive behaviors. These findings suggest that improving mothers’psychological well-being and enhancing their parenting efficacy are essential in preventing children’s maladaptive behaviors. Second, parenting efficacy was found to fully mediate the relationship between mothers’psychological well-being and children’s internalizing/externalizing maladaptive behaviors. This implies that since it is challenging for mothers to maintain high psychological well-being at all times during the parenting process, they should recognize the importance of parenting efficacy. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for various parenting education programs that support the enhancement of mothers’parenting efficacy to help prevent children’s maladaptive behaviors.
