This study examines the involvement of Japan's Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency in Korean traditional music during the Japanese colonial period, focusing on the activities of Takei Morishige (武井守成) and Ōno Tadatomo (多忠朝). Takei Morishige was the first official from the Imperial Household Agency in Japan dispatched to Korea to investigate Korean court music (aak). In 1926, he visited Korea and collaborated with the Government-General to explore ways to utilize aak. Performances of Korean court music at the Chōsen Shrine began after his visit and continued for two decades until Japan's defeat in World War II. Takei also composed a mandolin concerto incorporating Korean aak and instruments, attempting to bridge Japanese and Korean music. Ōno Tadatomo, as the chief conductor of the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency, was deeply involved in Korean music. After his 1926 visit, he regularly traveled to Korea from 1934 to 1939, teaching music and dance at the Chōsen Shrine and promoting imperial loyalty through musical expression. He replicated the Korean ajaeng to create new instruments and composed ritual music (bugaku), which he integrated into Japanese state ceremonies, aiming to blend Korean and Japanese music in line with naisen ittai (Japan-Korea unity). Takei and Ōno are regarded as key figures in the musical realization of Japan’s imperial colonial policy.
