Purpose: This study explored how Korean Social and Emotional Education, which emphasizes holistic growth and mental health, can be applied to school counseling, focusing on the roles of school counselors. Methods: The conceptual features of Korean Social and Emotional Education and the purposes of school counseling were reviewed the focusing on counselors’ competencies, roles and practices. Results: Commonalities were found between Korean Social and Emotional Education goals and the preventive–intervention–follow-up paradigm. Accordingly, counselors’ roles should be expanded to include leading universal mental health education, collaboration with teachers, the provision of specialized counseling for at-risk students and evaluation of outcomes through evidenced-based research. Conclusion: The study proposes a Korean Social and Emotional Education based school counseling model and emphasizes the need to broaden counselors’ roles, highlighting implications for both practice and policy and suggesting directions for future research.
