리듬 연구에서 치환기법에 이르기까지 - 메시앙의 <4개의 리듬 연습곡>을 중심으로

초록

Messiaen’s piano solo composition, Quatre études de rythme, marks the culmination of his lifelong work with rhythm. By separating musical parameters to develop a new system called permutations and translating musical notes with algebra, he redefined compositional logic. His work introduced non-traditional combinations such as religion and birdsong and found a new perspective in timbre, harmony, resonance and mode. Later, his language became the template for Total Serialism which dominated European musical society for several decades. However, Messiaen’s rhythm and that used by serialists are fundamentally different. This study clarifies their differences, Messiaen’s motivations for his work in rhythm theory, and how that is revealed in his musical world.
