인터넷과 디지털 시민성에 관한 탐색적 논의: 인터넷 이용 형태와 온라인 정치참여의 관계를 중심으로

In this paper, we examine the relationship between internet using pattern and online-political-participation. Generally, communication on internet is known to form the public reason and public opinion which are the base of democracy, and have positive effects on the democratic attitude forming. This paper is aimed to examine the relationship of internet using pattern and online-political-participation. Internet using patter as independent variable is divided into 11 classes and the degree of online-political-participation as independent variable measures six political behaviors on internet. We examine the mean difference of the degree of online-political-participation among those classes. The data is from 1,000 people over age 16. First, internet using pattern is influenced by sex, age, education, occupation but not by the place of residence and income level. Second, the internet using pattern and the degree of online-political-participation reflects the socio-demographic characteristics. However, only shopping, auction, and game sites do not show mean difference regarding some political behavior on internet. Third, controlling sex, age, place of residence, income, occupation, and education, the more people use sites from newspaper, broadcasting company, academic, and online game, the more participate in online-politics. This analysis does not show the causal relationship between internet using pattern and online-political-participation clearly because we still do not know clearly whether interests in offline-politics make people participate in online-politics actively, or whether using internet make people participate in politics actively. However, we can see that the participation in politics increases with the using internet.
