초록
The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status of culture and arts education in general education curriculum at Korean universities and to propose improvement strategies for its future development. For this purpose, the curricula of 10 national universities were examined, including the 2025 academic year course catalog, curriculum maps, and syllabi. The analysis focused on the organization and offering rates of culture and arts education courses, as well as regional and disciplinary characteristics of course operation. The findings revealed the following: Firstly, culture and arts education courses accounted for an average of 12% of total general education courses, with an offering rate of 89.8%, although disparities were evident across institutions. Secondly, most courses were categorized as elective, with a heavy concentration in literature and fine arts, indicating an imbalance in subject representation. Thirdly, while the courses were primarily theory-based, blended instructional methods were most prevalent. Variations in course design, instructional types, and teaching-learning approaches across fields underscore the need to account for disciplinary characteristics. Accordingly, the study calls for a stronger policy framework for arts education, balanced cross-field development, greater integration of practice with theory, and enhanced discipline-specific teaching capacities.
