This study investigated the Magazine Collection of the Gachon Museum which encompass more than 20,000 first issues of magazines published in Korea since 1900. In order to assess the characteristics of magazines published in Korea in modern times, the study focused on the first issues of magazines published from 1900 to 1969. For each first issue of 1,356 magazines launched in that modern time period, bibliographic elements such as full title, language of title, language of main texts, writing directions (vertical/horizontal), publisher, printing press, place of publication, subscription fee and subjects were fully described. The number of magazines launched was gradually increased till 1940s, but it was rapidly and significantly grown from 1950s. The magazines published in those days mostly covered education and literature. The writing direction was changed from vertical to horizontal during 1940's. Interesting portion of the Gachon Colletion was the magazines that were discarded by university libraries. The majority of printing presses was located in Seoul. They were centered around Jongro-gu and Jung-gu, then were spread out to surrounding areas over time. The bibliometric analysis of the first issues of magazines distinctively showed the characteristics of Korean magazines published in modern times. The bibliometric approach also captured the historical changes reflecting the cultural, social and political situations of the time periods examined.
