The purpose of this study was to investigate aspects of the language performance of advanced learners of Korean according to the topics of their compositions. This study separated syntactic and vocabulary aspects of the topics when examining the complexity and accuracy of writing by exchange students majoring in Korean. Regarding the average value of syntactic complexity, all items were found to show high values in compositions on social subjects, but there was no statistically significant difference in syntactic complexity by topic. Furthermore, vocabulary diversity and vocabulary density were measured as indices of lexical complexity, and the items that showed statistically significant differences were vocabulary used more than four times and vocabulary used more than six times. This confirmed that the vocabulary diversity of personal subject writing materials was high. There were also statistically significant differences in the use of common nouns in social subject writing and the use of common adverbs in personal writing. Finally, it was found that compositions on social subjects showed higher accuracy than personal subjects on an average. However, there was no statistically significant difference. This indicates that the writing topic did not affect the accuracy of learners’ language performance.
