In this study, the clinical utility of five depression-related scales of the K-CBCL 6-18 (Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18)—namely, Anxious/Depressed, Withdrawn/Depressed, Somatic Complaints, Internalizing Problems, and DSM-Oriented Emotional Problems— was examined for diagnosing depressive disorders in children and adolescents with psychological disorders residing in child residential facilities. The study included 466 elementary school students and 321 middle and high school students with psychological disorders residing in child residential facility who participated in the ‘Psychotherapy and Counseling Services for Children in Residential Facility’ from 2013 to 2022. The research instruments used were the K-CBCL 6-18, along with the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) for elementary school students and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for middle or high school students. Discriminant analysis and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis were conducted on the depression-related scales of the K-CBCL 6-18 to examine sensitivity and specificity, and to propose optimal cutoff scores. The results of this study showed that, first, all five depression-related scales of the K-CBCL 6-18 had higher scores in the depressive group compared to the non-depressive group, indicating that these scales are useful for differential diagnosis of depressive disorders. Second, discriminant analysis was conducted to examine the classification accuracy of the K-CBCL 6-18 depression-related scales between the depressive disorder group and the non-depressive disorder group. The results showed that all five depression-related scales significantly discriminated between the two groups, with classification accuracy ranging from 67.5% to 72.6%. Third, based on the AUC (Area Under the Curve) values for diagnosing depressive disorders, the optimal cutoff scores for the five depression-related scales of the K-CBCL 6-18 were suggested as follows: 62T for the Anxious/Depressed, 63T for the Withdrawn/Depressed, 59T for the Somatic Complaints, 66T for the Internalizing Problems scale, and 65T for the DSM-Oriented Emotional Problems. In conclusions, the significance of this study lies in its proposal of optimal cutoff scores for the depression-related scales of the K-CBCL 6-18, highlighting its usefulness as a diagnostic tool for identifying depressive disorders in children and adolescents with psychological disorders.
